Absences & Recesses

I use India ink on kozo paper to create weave-like patterns that record my relationship to place within the context of climate change. Seemingly abstract, each drawing synthesizes multiple forms of record-keeping: map-making, charting, journaling, and close observation of micro and macro landscape—from the light filtering through a leaf to the feeling of walking around a body of water. They are an outgrowth of my weaving practice, evoking the flexibility of cloth and mathematical patterning of weaving, while also breaking away from the loom’s imposed logic.

Through the “Absences & Recesses” series, I reflect on places and bodies scared by petrochemical extraction, meditating on loss in the face of ongoing climate crises and health crises.
