Paper Bricks

Spun discarded paper and embroidery thread

Each 8” x 2”, installation size variable, show below 60” x 40”

Made during a residency at Prairie Ronde in Vicksburg, MI, in response to my time exploring what used to be one of many paper mills in the region. The massive mill is made from countless Chicago bricks in yellows, oranges, pinks, reds, purples, and browns. Weaving bricks from discarded paper was an extension of my ongoing exploration of relationships to place, trees, industry, and waste. Each paper brick mimics the size of the majority of brick faces in the mill, 8”x2”. The paper is interwoven with embroidery threads leftover from my mom’s past projects. As I wove I reflected on the shared sedimentary nature of bricklaying, weaving, and ecological and social histories.
